Addressing Academic Dishonesty
When Academic Dishonesty Occurs in a Course
This guide outlines the steps faculty should follow when academic dishonesty is suspected in a course, seminar, or academic activity under their supervision. You can make a report you the Dean of Students office Here.
Before taking any action, ensure there is substantial, well-documented evidence to support the allegation of academic dishonesty. Clear documentation is essential, as the decision and process may be subject to a student grievance.
Arrange a meeting with the student to discuss the alleged violation.
- Invite a colleague, teaching assistant, or staff member to be present.
- Clearly explain the concern and provide the student an opportunity to respond.
- If the student fails or refuses to meet after a reasonable effort to schedule, you may move forward based on the available information.
- If you determine that no violation occurred, close the matter with no further action.
- If a violation did occur, consult with your department, program, or college to determine the appropriate academic sanction.
- Determine whether the violation will be addressed solely within the department or reported to the University through the Dean of Students Office.
cademic Sanctions include:
- Allowing the student to redo the assignment or exam, assigning a failing grade for the assignment or exam, or other course-level consequences as permitted by department and University policy.
- Assigning a grade of “F” in the course and withdrawing the student from the class Note: The most serious penalty an instructor may assign is an “F” in the course and removal from the class.
If an academic integrity violation is reported and addressed solely within a department or college, the record remains internal to that department. It is not part of the student’s university-wide conduct record unless the incident is also reported to the Dean of Students Office. By notifying the Dean of Students Office, faculty are formally reporting the infraction at the university level, allowing it to be documented as part of the student’s overall conduct history.
Submit a report to both your department and the Dean of Students.
- Use the Dean of Students online Reporting- Academic Dishonesty to submit allegations of Academic Integrity violation to the university.
